Swim Meet 101
As a team in the North Hills Summer Swim League, we have 7 dual meets and a championship meet each summer. In all meets, the types of events are very similar. They are:
List of Events:
Medley Relay
In the 17 & under age group, this is a 200 meter event with each swimmer doing a 50 meter leg. All four swimmers will begin at the starting block. In all other age groups, this is a 100 meter event with each swimmer doing a 25 meter leg. The backstroke and butterfly legs will begin at the starting block and the breaststroke and freestyle legs will begin at the opposite end of the pool. In all age groups, this is a boys only or girls only event.
1st swimmer - Backstroke
2nd swimmer - Breaststroke
3rd swimmer - Butterfly
4th swimmer - Freestyle
Crescendo Relay
We have three types of crescendo relays: backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. The first swimmer in the relay must be from the 8 & under age group, the second swimmer must be in the 10 & under age group or younger, the third swimmer must be in the 12 & under age group or younger and the fourth swimmer can be from any age group (but is typically from the 17 & under or 14 & under age group). All crescendo relays are 100 meters with each swimmer swimming a 25 meter leg. All crescendo relays are boys only or girls only.
Freestyle Relay
There are several freestyle relay events. There are boys only, girls only and mixed. For boys only, there are 200 meter for 17 & under and 100 meter for 12 & under, 10 & under and 8 & under. For girls only, there are the same events.
For mixed freestyle, there are 200 meter for 17 & under and for 14 & under as well as 100 meter for 12 & under, 10 & under and 8 & under. In the mixed freestyle, the order MUST BE girl, boy, girl, boy.
Individual Medley
This is a single swimmer doing a 100 meter event with the first 25 meter leg being butterfly, the second leg being backstroke, the third leg being breaststroke and the fourth leg being freestyle.
The individual medley is only in the 12 & under and 17 & under age groups.
This event is included in all dual meets but not in the championship meet.
Individual freestyle
This is a single swimmer doing a 50 meter freestyle event (for age groups 17 & under, 14 & under and 12 & under) or a 25 meter freestyle event (for younger age groups).
Events not in our meets
Our league does not have individual events for butterfly, breaststroke or backstroke. However, the events are contested at the year-end individual championships.
Scoring
In relay events, first place is awarded 6 points, second place 3 points and third place 1 point.
In individual events, first place is awarded 5 points, second place 3 points and third place 1 point.
If a team sweeps an event, it will only be awarded points for first and second place.
